Notice of Prescribed Burns

Home - Hopewell Township News Posted on February 02, 2026

Hopewell Township, Mercer County, NJ - Friends of Hopewell Valley Open Space (FoHVOS) is planning prescribed burns at several of their preserves. The fires will be used to manage meadows: reducing undesirable invasive shrubs and promote native flowers and grasses. Local research has demonstrated that dormant season burning has positive impacts on native plant populations in these habitats.

The NJ Forest Fire Service (NJFFS) will provide a 48-hour notice to FoHVOS once the date of the events is confirmed. NJFFA will provide all necessary notifications to emergency services and similar. FoHVOS will also post the date(s) of prescribed burns on their social media platforms.

Preserves included:

  • Nayfield Preserve
  • Heritage Preserve
  • Woodsville Preserve
  • Marshalls Corner Preserve
  • Skyview Preserve

Time Period: Dormant season burns typically take place from February through mid-April.

It is critical that the public stay out of the preserves on the day the prescribed burns are conducted, even if there is no active fire.  The preserves will remain closed to the public until NJFFS has approved public use.
