Hopewell Township would like to thank all of the community members who have participated in our Community and Senior Center planning.
On the evening of April 13th we met to discuss our visions for this new facility. Excellent suggestions were offered to improve access and services for our seniors, and additional ideas for community use were proposed. This building would be the gathering place in the Township for all people of all ages and for a variety of uses, including presentation and performing arts space.
The Township has brought together community participants who are interested in being part of this project, and all are looking forward to more engagement as the planning continues.
Late last year, after a competitive process, the Township Committee hired the architectural firm Speizle. To begin, they were asked to gather stakeholders and reach out to the broader community to gather input on the needs this new space could meet. These stakeholders include our Senior Advisory Board, the school district, the YMCA, the Municipal Alliance, representatives from Hopewell and Pennington Boroughs, and the leaders of other Hopewell Valley non-profit organizations and community groups. Additionally, our Parks & Recreation Director Karin Poveromo and other members of the recreation community provided valuable insight.
The stakeholders formed working groups, and each has met with the firm twice. They shared both their necessities as well as hopes for uses of the new space. The architects are working to translate all the information gathered into a building that is efficient, active throughout the day, and available to the whole community. The goal is to create a space that meets current needs, allows room for growth, and does so in a way that is respectful of the timing needs of all.
At the meeting on the 13th, Hopewell Township’s Director of Community Development, Mark Kataryniak, shared the current status of the building development. The architects shared ideas and possibilities for the space based on their experience and the uses other communities have employed.
For many years people in the Hopewell Valley have dreamed about a space like the one proposed. Countless residents have given their time and energy, and support for the project is growing.
It’s an exciting time! Now we are asking the entire community to share their vision for this new Community Center. Some of our residents are imagining a space where, for instance, the seniors could take a class on English Literature, then a fitness class, and finish the day getting coffee with a friend. Parents could come for a workout, then pick up their kids from the after-school robotics program in the same building. Local organizations might have a dinner meeting on the proposed rooftop space overlooking our beautiful Valley. Many ideas will be incorporated, so everyone has a place.
Thanks go to the community members who have spent hours already working on this project with Speizle and those who attended the meeting. We want to hear from as many people as possible. We know great ideas are everywhere.
