Snow Removal
Objective
The objective of the Hopewell Township Public Works Department Snow and Ice Control Operation is to maintain reasonably safe wintertime transportation on Hopewell Township roads through the use of best management practices.
Ice Control Operations
- Pretreated salt is applied to the roads at the beginning of a snowfall in order to prevent the snow from bonding to the pavement.
- Pretreated salt can only be applied to pavement with snow on it. It is not effective in the rain or on dry pavement.
Snow Operations
- Snow plowing usually begins when 2 or more inches of snow has accumulated. One pass in each direction is plowed to keep roads open for emergency vehicles.
- Snow plowing to the curb will start near the end of the snowfall and may proceed for an additional 6-24 hours.
- Local ordinance prohibits parking on municipal roads when 2 or more inches of snow has accumulated. This assures sufficient clearance for plows and emergency vehicles.
Helpful Snow Event Information for Residents
- Mailboxes should be placed 6”-8” from the edge of the road.
- Secure mailbox and replace rotten post.
- Remove basketball hoops, hockey goals, skateboard ramps, etc., to prevent damage to plow trucks and athletic equipment.
- Remove trash and recycling cans
- Please do not plow, blow, or shovel snow into the roadway. This can create a driving hazard.
- It is best to clear driveways after snow is plowed to the curb. A plow truck may make 2-6 passes to plow to the curb. 3 Snow and Ice Control Operations
