Honoring 250 Years of American Independence

In 2026, communities across the nation will come together to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States. Known as America's 250th, or the Semiquincentennial, this milestone marks a quarter-millennium since the signing of the Declaration of Independence and the ideals of democracy, freedom, and civic engagement that continue to shape our nation. This celebration offers an opportunity to reflect on our shared history, honor the people and events that helped build our country, and look ahead to the future we are creating together.

Local History, National Significance

Hopewell Township holds a meaningful place in the story of the American Revolution, most notably through its connection to General George Washington's 1776 crossing of the Delaware River and the pivotal events that followed. In the days after the crossing, Washington and the Continental Army marched through central New Jersey, including areas that are now part of Hopewell Township, on their way to the historic victory at the Battle of Trenton. These movements and encampments helped shift the momentum of the Revolutionary War at a critical moment, demonstrating the resilience and determination that would ultimately lead to American independence.

As the nation marks its 250th anniversary, Hopewell Township's Revolutionary War history serves as a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made here in pursuit of liberty and self-governance.
